How does it work?
The Alexander technique is based on the principle that mind and body are not in any way separable. Our nervous system and musculature is closely connected, and any change involves both. We move and respond the way we do because we have learned to, and as our patterns become automatic, they also become less accessible to change.
F. M. Alexander, the founder of the technique, discovered that in order to change at this deeper level, we need to put a stop between the stimulus to act and the action itself. In this way we can unlearn old patterns and find new ways of responding that are easier and less effortful.
